Paintless Dent Removal

Paintless Dent Removal in Central Ohio

Technician using a paintless dent removal rod behind a red door panel, with a striped reflection board showing the contour of the metal

The striped reflection is a line board. Distortion in those stripes is how a technician reads the shape of the metal — and knows when it is back.

Paintless dent removal takes the dent out without touching the paint. A technician reaches behind the panel with specialised rods and works the metal back to its original shape from the inside, a fraction of a millimetre at a time. Nothing is filled, sanded or sprayed. When the job is finished, the panel is wearing exactly the same factory finish it left the assembly line with.

That is worth more than it sounds. Factory paint is applied to bare steel in conditions no body shop can reproduce — dipped, baked, and layered with corrosion protection. Any refinish, however well done, is a very good imitation of that. So when a dent can be taken out without breaking the finish, it is not just the faster and cheaper option; it is the better repair. It is also the first thing we check for, before we quote anything else. More on how we make that call on our dent repair page and in how we follow OEM repair standards.

What Decides Whether PDR Will Work

From the outside, two dents can look almost identical and only one of them is a paintless candidate. These are the things we are actually assessing when you bring it in:

  • Whether the paint is genuinely unbroken — a hairline crack you cannot see from standing height rules it out
  • Whether the dent is a smooth depression or a sharp crease; creases mean the metal has been stretched and will not simply return
  • How far the metal has been stretched — deep damage can be improved but not always brought back to a flawless finish
  • Whether there is access behind the panel, or whether trim, bracing or a bonded structure is in the way
  • Where the dent sits: panel edges and body lines are the most rigid places on a car and the hardest to work
  • What the panel is made of — aluminium has less memory than steel and takes longer, with a lower success rate
  • Whether the vehicle has ever been refinished there before; repainted panels do not respond the way factory finish does

Why Drivers Choose Excite for Paintless Dent Removal

  • We check for PDR first, every time. It is the smaller job and the better outcome. If your dent qualifies, we will tell you — rather than quoting a refinish because it is worth more.
  • A straight answer about what is achievable. Some dents come out perfectly; some come out ninety per cent of the way. We tell you which one you are looking at before you commit, not after.
  • Your factory finish stays factory. No filler, no primer, no blend into the next panel, and no new paint boundary to fail years from now.
  • Hail damage handled at volume. A hailstorm puts dozens of small dents across a roof, hood and trunk — the case PDR was made for. See hail damage repair.
  • If PDR is not right, we say so. Forcing a paintless repair on damage that needs conventional work produces a panel that looks almost right, which is worse than doing it properly.
  • Free assessment, up-front pricing. You get the recommendation and the number before anything starts, and the vehicle comes back cleaned inside and out.

Quick Paintless Dent Removal Questions

The questions we hear most about PDR. If yours isn’t here, call the shop at (614) 930-6103 — we’re glad to walk you through it.

What is paintless dent removal?

A technique for pushing a dent back out from behind the panel using specialised rods and tips, without disturbing the paint. Where there is no access from behind, tabs can be glued to the outside of the panel and the dent drawn out instead. Either way nothing is filled, sanded or sprayed, and the original factory finish stays exactly as it was.

Is my dent a candidate for PDR?

The short version: if the paint is unbroken, the dent is a smooth depression rather than a sharp crease, and there is a way to reach the back of the panel, there is a good chance. Door dings, shopping-cart dents and hail are the classic cases. Send us a photo from your phone and we can usually tell you before you drive over.

Does PDR damage the paint?

Done correctly, no — that is the entire point of it. The metal is moved gradually enough that the finish flexes with it rather than cracking. Done impatiently, on damage that was never suitable, paint can crack or the surface can end up with high spots. Which is why the assessment matters more than the technique, and why we will decline a dent that should not be done this way.

Why does keeping the factory paint matter so much?

Factory paint is applied to a bare shell in conditions a body shop cannot replicate — dipped, electrostatically coated, baked at temperatures a fully assembled car could never take. It is the most durable and corrosion-resistant finish your vehicle will ever wear. A refinish can look identical and still be an imitation of that. Keeping the original also keeps the panel free of a repainted area on any future inspection.

What are the stripes I see reflected on the panel?

That is a line board, and it is the most important tool in the process. A dent is very hard to see directly, but it distorts a reflection dramatically. By watching how straight lines bend across the panel, a technician can read the exact shape of the damage and see the moment the metal comes back true — far more precisely than by eye or by touch.

How long does paintless dent removal take?

A single door ding is often an hour or two. Several dents, or one in an awkward spot that needs trim removed for access, take longer. Hail damage across multiple panels is measured in days rather than hours. There is no paint and no cure time involved, which is why PDR is almost always quicker than a conventional repair on the same panel.

Is PDR cheaper than conventional dent repair?

Usually, and often by a wide margin, because there are no materials and no refinish labour. The cost depends on size, depth, location and how many dents there are rather than on a flat rate. We will give you the number before starting — and if the damage turns out not to be a paintless candidate, we will tell you that instead of charging you to find out.

Will PDR work on hail damage?

Hail is the case paintless removal is best suited to. The dents are usually numerous, shallow, round and land on horizontal panels with good access behind them — and the finish is normally intact. It also means a hail-damaged car can be repaired without every panel on it carrying a repainted area. Larger stones that crack paint or crease metal are the exception. See our hail damage page.

Do I need an appointment?

An appointment gets you seen faster, and you can request one online or send a photo of the dent from your phone. A picture taken at an angle, with a window or light reflecting across the panel, tells us far more than one taken straight on.
