
The cameras and radar units behind your windshield, grille and mirrors are what make lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise and blind-spot monitoring work. They are aimed to a tolerance measured in fractions of a degree. Move one slightly — replacing a windshield, taking off a bumper cover, straightening a structure — and it is still watching the road, just not the part of the road the engineer intended. ADAS calibration is how that aim gets restored and proven.

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — the cameras, radar and sensors behind features like automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, adaptive cruise and blind-spot monitoring. Calibration is the process of re-aiming and re-verifying those sensors to the manufacturer’s exact specification after something moves them. Without it, the system is still running, but its idea of where the road is no longer matches reality.
Usually not, and this is the single most important thing to understand about these systems. There is no dash light for “your blind-spot monitor is aimed slightly wrong” or “your adaptive cruise is reading the wrong lane.” A sensor can be measurably out of specification while every warning light on the dash stays dark. The only way to know is to measure it against the manufacturer’s specification.
Go by what was done to the car, not by how it feels. Windshield replacement, bumper cover removal or replacement, mirror replacement, suspension or alignment work, ride-height changes, structural repair and airbag deployment are all common triggers. The manufacturer publishes which operations require calibration for your specific vehicle — we look it up rather than guess.
Static calibration happens in the shop: the vehicle sits on a level floor and precisely positioned targets are set at measured distances and heights under controlled lighting. Dynamic calibration happens on the road, with the vehicle driven at a specified speed under specified conditions while the system re-learns. Some vehicles need one, some need the other, and some need both in a particular order.
On most late-model vehicles the forward-facing camera is mounted to the glass or to a bracket bonded to it. Take the glass out and put new glass in, and that camera has moved — even by an amount you could not see. Because it is looking hundreds of feet down the road, a tiny change in angle at the windshield becomes a large error at distance. See our auto glass page for how the two jobs fit together.
Yes. Front radar for adaptive cruise and automatic emergency braking is commonly mounted behind the bumper cover or in the grille, and parking sensors sit in the cover itself. Removing and refitting that cover — even with no visible damage behind it — can be enough to require calibration. It is one of the most frequently skipped steps in collision repair, because the damage looks cosmetic.
A straightforward static calibration is often a couple of hours. Dynamic calibration adds a road drive that has to meet specific conditions — speed, lane markings, sometimes weather — so it can wait on traffic or daylight. Vehicles needing several systems calibrated take longer. We fold it into the repair timeline and tell you up front rather than tacking it on at the end.
When it is required by the manufacturer’s repair procedure, it is part of restoring the vehicle — and that is the case we make. Sometimes it appears on a supplement rather than the first estimate, because the requirement only becomes clear once the repair plan is written.
