Paint Repair in Central Ohio

Paint is the last thing anyone notices and the first thing that gives a bad repair away. A colour that is almost right, a panel that catches the light a little differently than the one beside it, a clear coat that clouds after one Ohio winter — those are the tells. Automotive paint is not a coat of colour; it is a layered system, and matching it to a car that has been sitting in the sun for years has more in common with chemistry than with painting.

Whether a collision repair needs refinishing, an earlier shop’s paint no longer matches, or stone chips and road rash have worn through the finish, the job underneath is the same: read the colour the car actually is today, rebuild the paint the way the factory layered it, and blend into the surrounding panels so the eye never finds an edge. It is also where a repair is most often rushed — which is why we hold it to the same OEM repair standards as the structural work.

What You Can’t See in a Paint Job

Prep is most of a paint job and none of what you see afterward — sanded flat, cleaned, and primed before any colour goes on.

A finished paint repair looks like one smooth, even colour. Whether it still looks that way in two years — or starts to stand out, cloud, or peel — comes down to steps that are buried by the time the car is handed back:

  • Whether the colour was matched to the car as it is today, or just mixed to the factory paint code and sprayed on
  • Whether the painter sprayed test cards and checked them in daylight before touching the vehicle
  • Whether the adjacent panels were blended, or the new paint stops dead at a panel edge where any mismatch shows most
  • Whether the surface underneath was properly stripped, cleaned and primed, or painted over contamination that lifts the finish later
  • Whether the clear coat went on in full, even coats and was cured properly, or rushed so the shop could move the car out
  • Whether the right paint system was used for your finish — single-stage, base-coat/clear-coat, metallic, pearl or tri-coat each behaves differently
  • Whether the booth was clean, because dust that cures into clear coat is permanent and only comes out by sanding it back

Why Drivers Choose Excite for Paint Repair

  • Matched to your car, not to the code. Paint ages in the sun. We match to the actual panel, spray test cards to confirm in daylight, and only then commit colour to the vehicle.
  • Blended, not bricked in. New colour is feathered into the neighbouring panels rather than stopped hard at a seam, so the repair disappears instead of drawing a line across your car.
  • The right system for your finish. Metallics, pearls and tri-coats change with the light and the viewing angle. We spray them the way they were built, in the correct number of stages, not as a flat single coat.
  • Prepared and protected underneath. Bare metal is cleaned and primed, corrosion protection is restored, and the finish is built up in proper coats — because rushed prep is what fails first, well after you have driven away.
  • I-CAR, ASE, PPG and 3M certified technicians and estimators. PPG and 3M certification is refinishing and materials training specifically — which is most of what a paint repair actually is.
  • Free assessment, up-front pricing, work that is warrantied. You get the recommendation and the number before anything starts, and the vehicle comes back cleaned inside and out.

Quick Paint Repair Questions

The questions we hear most about colour matching, blending and refinishing. If yours isn’t here, call the shop at (614) 930-6103 — we’re glad to walk you through it.

How do you match my paint colour?

We start from the vehicle’s paint code to get close, then correct from there against the actual panel — because paint on the code and paint on your car are rarely the same after a few years in the sun. We mix, spray test cards, and check them against your finish in daylight before any colour touches the vehicle. Only when the card disappears against the panel do we paint the car.

Why can’t you just use the factory paint code?

The code tells us what the colour was the day the car was built. Sun, heat, road grime and time move every finish from there, and two cars with the same code can sit noticeably apart after a few years. The code is where we start, not where we finish. Using it alone is exactly how you end up with a panel that is technically the right colour and still visibly wrong next to the rest of the car.

What is paint blending, and why does it matter?

Blending means carrying the new colour a little way into the panels next to the repair instead of stopping it hard at the seam. Even a near-perfect match can reveal itself as a straight edge where old paint meets new; blending feathers that transition across a panel so there is no line for your eye to catch. It uses more material and more labour, and it is the difference between a repair you cannot find and one you can.

Will you repaint just the damaged spot or the whole panel?

Whichever gives the cleaner result, and we tell you which before we start. A small chip in a solid colour can sometimes be spot-repaired; a scratch across a metallic panel usually means refinishing the whole panel and blending into the ones beside it, because metallics are almost impossible to spot in invisibly. We base the call on your paint type and where the damage sits, not on whichever is quickest.

What is the difference between single-stage, base-coat/clear-coat, and tri-coat paint?

Single-stage carries the colour and the gloss in one coat and is mostly found on older vehicles. Base-coat/clear-coat — colour first, clear on top — is what nearly every modern car wears, and the clear is what you actually polish and protect. Tri-coat adds a translucent mid-coat for pearl and candy finishes, so the colour shifts with the light. Each needs a different spraying approach, and matching a tri-coat in particular takes extra test panels to get right.

Can you fix clear coat that is peeling, cloudy or flaking?

Yes, and it is one of the more common paint jobs we do. Clear coat failure — a milky haze, or the top layer lifting and flaking — is usually the finish breaking down from years of sun and cannot be buffed back once it starts. The repair is to strip the failed area back to a sound surface, refinish it, and blend into the surrounding panels. Caught early, while it is one panel rather than the whole roof and hood, it is a smaller job.

How long does the paint need to cure before I use the car?

The finish is dry to the touch and safe to drive within hours, and we do not hand a car back before it is. Fully hardened is a longer story — fresh paint keeps curing for a few weeks, so for that window we ask you to avoid automatic car washes, harsh chemicals and stick-on badges, and to hand wash gently. We will give you the specifics for your repair when you pick up the vehicle.

Is factory paint better than a shop refinish?

Factory paint is baked onto a bare shell at temperatures a built-up car could never survive, so an original finish that is still sound is always worth preserving — which is exactly why we recommend paintless dent removal whenever the finish allows it. When refinishing is genuinely needed, a properly prepared, correctly cured, professionally blended repair is built to match the factory finish beside it and to last. The gap is not the paint; it is whether the work behind it was done right.

Do I need an appointment, or can you look at it first?

Either works. You can request an appointment online or send a photo of the damage from your phone, and often that is enough for us to tell you whether you are looking at a spot repair, a panel refinish, or clear-coat work before you drive over. The assessment and the estimate are free either way, and you get the number before any work begins.
